English 1101 was my first time returning to the classroom after 15 very long years. I am thankful this was my first class back. I have come to recognize the good, the bad, and the ugly in my writing. I have seen changes both big and small in the way I write. I have gained an immense amount of knowledge and how to apply these principles to produce better compositions. The eight weeks have been very eye opening. If I could give myself one small, but very important piece of advice prior to walking through the door eight weeks ago, it would be, give yourself enough time to produce quality work.
I appreciate the feedback I received from this class. It pointed out strengths, weakness and areas of improvement. I consider my strength to be the way I use adjectives to connect readers to my writing. Composing a grammatically correct composition is a weakness. I am the queen of run-on sentences. I do not know the rules on the proper usage of a coma and a semicolon. I received a wakeup call when I reread and revised assignment one. I honestly thought it was an ok paper, when I turned it in, during week one. I was very wrong, it was scrap paper. My writing was atrocious, my thoughts where all over the place and thesis was not properly stated or supported in my writing.
Identifying so many errors in my writing was great motivation for change. I had a new found desire to learn. I did not want to be a mediocre writer; I wanted to be a skilled writer. I now write in stages. I use many methods to develop ideas. I have found brainstorming, free writing, and mapping to be essential tools. While I write, I repeatedly pinpoint the thesis and supporting statements. I like to ensure my composition reads, organized and well thought out. I believe these changes are helping me become a writer. There is still much to learn. To be completely honest, the realization that I make so many grammatical errors when I write has caused me to put any creative writing interests on hold.
Creating the photo essay using Photo Peach was a creative fete and my favorite discovery. I had not used photo peach prior to this class. I had no idea the power a photo essay could present. I view my photo essay as my greatest collegiate experience thus far. I know it is an achievement, because of the things I had to overcome to enable myself to feel secure enough to make such a painful part of my life to public. I do not have any regrets. I see it as a growing process; I grew as a person and a writer.
In the future, my goal is to grow as a writer. I do not seek to be the best writer or the most recognized writer; I simply seek to be a skilled writer. In four years, I hope to turn to my daughters with my college diploma in hand and tell them, “I’m proof you can reach any goal you set your mind to.”
I believe my portfolio deserves a B-. My grammatical errors may place me into the C category, but in my opinion my effort and revisions should bump me to a low B. I am eager to learn and apply what I
have learned to continually improve.
